What now for Gulf? Fire complicates drill debate

AP -- What now for the Gulf? News of another oil rig fire in the Gulf of Mexico, so soon after the BP oil spill, has set off a wave of anxiety along the Gulf Coast and prompted calls for the government to extend its six-month ban on deepwater drilling.

Just when it seemed the Obama administration might be ready to lift the unpopular ban, the fire raises new questions about the dangers of offshore drilling, leaving the industry wondering when it can get back to work.

"Anything that casts any kind of shadow on the industry right now certainly complicates lifting the moratorium," said Bruce Bullock, director of the Maguire Energy Institute at Southern Methodist University in Texas. "It makes it difficult to continue to say that (the BP spill) is an aberration."

I admit, after reading the posts on this board for many months, I'm still finding myself surprised at the total incomprehensibility of some folks' arguments.

There is a big difference between drilling operations and production. The range of things that can go wrong are different, the consequences are different.

The article says there are about 3,400 platforms operating in the Gulf, pumping about a third of America's domestic oil. An expert said, "There's over 100 fires in the Gulf in a given year. Were it not for the BP incident this would receive very little coverage." It seems there have been two fires a week for many years; virtually all of them are extinguished without becoming noteworthy.

I look forward to the day the news media provide accurate information. Until then, I'll remember what Mark Twain said; “If you don't read the newspaper, you are uninformed; if you do read the newspaper, you are misinformed.”

Nothing worth discussing here. Fear of what does not need to be feared. Government forced drilling into deep water. Just need safe drilling but everyone in washington takes coverup money to look the other way.

The oil companies really don't want to drill, they want what they have open with current wells to be worth more. Higher bonuses you know.

The media types are trying to generate something they can print as "news". They are half of the problem in lots of things like this.

Anti drilling alarmists are grabbing onto any lifeline trying to have their way.

NOTHING HAPPENED HERE FOLKS.. The thing was shut down when it happened - probably some paint exploded, not oil, and caused the fire.....

Get a life.

Stick with topics you know, like toy boats ModelWarships. Play baby play.

Under this much scrutiny and with a moratorium in place, the latest oil rig fire in the GoM is real evidence that the oil industry still does not take safety seriously.

Energy production is a dangerous business. Doesn't matter if it's oil & gas, uranium, mining coal, cutting down trees or building dams. It's all dangerous stuff.

But oil is needed, and for the most part, these are relatively safe. Except maybe if a full blown Hurricane runs over the rig.

Lots of differences.
Starting with the second problem being a platform, and in much shallower water - meaning that the plans for dealing with problems had lots of viable, quickly applied backups.
The wells were shut down, and the fire on the platform extinguished.
The platform will need repairs before the wells can be put back into production.

I would not be surprised if the government or big oil something to do with it so the ban would not be lifted, allowing prices to go up again

Drilling in the ocean is dangerous and carries high risks. Keep the moratorium until there are contingenvy plans foe all known accident possibilities and prevention measures in place.

The ban should never have been implemented in the first place...if the government agencies would have been doing their jobs in the first place and enforced the regulations in place, the Deep Water rig incident would like not happened, setting off a firestore to stop all off shore drilling.
