GM Turns To Scare Tactics To Sell The 2011 Chevrolet Volt

all cars electric . com -- Fear is a powerful motivator. It has been used in the past to start wars, persuade kids to study at school and of course, sell life insurance.

But now GM appears to be gearing up to use the fear of running out of electricity to give the extended-range 2011 Chevrolet Volt a competitive edge over purely electric cars.

considering that the post from "all cars electric . com" is simply someone's opinion (I don't call it an article, nor real journalism) it's amazing how many ppl here get their hackles up.

Sneakers, I want to see them succeed with the Cruze and learn from it how to make a bread and butter product, and build on it.

Right on Jeannemarie. GM should hire you as head of marketing to help them stick to their guns and so it right.

All "Obumer" (to use your spelling of "Obama") wanted from Government Motors is a good Corolla.

They are thinking the name for that will be the Chevy Cruze.

"we think that the 2011 Volt advertising campaigns will use the fear of being stranded to sell the extended-range car"

That might work for a lot of people...

The fear of limited range in an all-electric versus a hybrid is a legitimate concern but my fear of buying anything made by GM is a much bigger concern.

They want to patent the term "range anxiety" to scare you into thinking their product is the only one that will not leave you stranded. The word Anxiety instills just what it implies. Maybe (name your brand) should patent "range happiness".

From the article:
"In what may be a counter productive move for GM, we think that the 2011 Volt advertising campaigns will use the fear of being stranded to sell the extended-range car."

"Scare tactics" ?

BS !

There is a difference in marketing the advantages of your product over another. The fear is when you make the claim that if you don't by something (a product in this case), it will result in harm to you.

this is absurd. gm cannot supply its pre- release demand. dealers are charging up to $20,000 premium over sticker msrp ($41,000)to get on their allocation list!

this article is pure garbage. and reflects equally in the submitter.

The source of this article does not appear to be a mainstream "news & information" site.

The author weaves facts into a conclusion that GM is improperly using fear to market a product. It's been said virtually all advertisements use fear to sell products (give that some thought when you see a TV commercial).

The author raises fear-mongering to a new level -- not a particularly good level, either.

Number43, Obamma did not ask GM to build the Volt.

"The Volt was first announced by General Motors (GM) in January 2007 as a concept car. This site, GM-volt.com, was created on the same date to help compel GM to build the car.

On June 3rd, 2008, GM CEO Rick Wagoner announced that the board of GM approved moving the Volt to production.

On September 16th 2008, GM unveiled the production version Chevy Volt to the world."

The best way to make a car saleable is to first design one that delights the eye, next have it convenient to use, next forget about the competition just do the best you can with that which you have developed. Your drivers will come.

GM is making what obamma wants, not what the people want. But it is none of my business what everyone else wishes. If you can use/need/want and can afford to purchass the volt or any other car, then you should do it. Likewise I will buy/use what I want and can afford an I don't give a damn who likes it. Now do you understand what I was saying-- lasing.

Xebra Electric Sedan

"Even after counting emissions from electric generating plants, Xebras produce 90% fewer pollutants than most current gas-powered cars."

"MSRP: $11,700 In Stock Now at Dealers Throughout the U.S."

Want this one Sisu58? Didn't think so. GM is making what people want, just not what you want.

I fear this whole electric car issue is an Obama wannabe issue. GM is out of control with this administration pulling their strings. Should have let them go belly-up so they could eliminate the Union and get reorganized back into a leaner car manufacturing company. And I have been a GM person for the 55 years.

I fear we will be paying too much if we buy a Volt. I fear we will run out of juice before we get to our destination if we buy a volt. I fear the 0bama admin will subsidize the Volt with my tax dollars.

Most people use their cars in their vacations and day trips. I cannot drive to the Red River Gorge ( a local favorite ) and back with a 40 mile range. That does not include driving the scenic area backroads. Am I suppose to shut off one of the more pleasant parts of my life just to please a pack of liberals. Hell NO ! I am sure not going to buy the most expensive car by far that I have ever bought just to be green. And neither will most other people. Some will buy but most of those will regret it. A few will be too left or /and too stupid to figure it out. obamma can take his little green car and shove it.

"Electric "MPG" does not include other uses for the onboard charge. Like running the A/C and radio/stereo, etc. What if you're stuck in a traffic jam? do you turn off everything to save idling costs?"

"idling costs"... are you serious? If your "stuck in a traffic jam", then the electric motors are OFF. THEY DON'T IDLE. The stereo likely consumes about 5-10W even with 6 speakers. An A/C unit? The engineers have already figured it out and factored it into the power consumption.

Electric vehicle range based upon a full charge is an estimate based upon ideal circumstances... just like MPG rating are on gas-powered vehicles. WHO actually gets THAT MPG rating?

If you ask about a "range per charge" for an electric vehicle, then WHY don't you ask a regular car dealer about a "range per full tank"??? You already KNOW why: It depends on driving conditions, operator driving style, hilly terrain, stop-and-go traffic, etc. Whatever will vary the load on an engine and take it away from the ideal operating constants.

Electric vehicles & electric hybrids all use regenerative braking — meaning that when you apply the brakes, the energy that would otherwise be lost is captured & used to recharge the batteries and extend its' operating capacity. Can an all-gas car do that to extend it's range? No.

Only in the last few years have the federal standards changed to more accurately simulate reality by including such loads when calculating MPGs. One would have similar expectations for quoted ranges of electric vehicles.

The car is just about perfect given today's technology, and leaves lots of room for future advancements.
