Deputies say trio staged auto accident in Tampa

St. Petersburg Times -- Sheriff's deputies arrested three people who they say staged an auto crash on Sheldon Road on Friday night.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office is reporting that Amauri Perez Delgado, 40, Zoraida Domitila Zayas Padilla, 41, and Frank Lopez Masso, 30, met before the crash to plan how they'd carry it out. About 10 p.m., they staged a crash at Sheldon Road and Hamilton Avenue, according to the Sheriff's Office.

They were planning to get money from their insurance companies by filing an insurance claim with an unknown pain management clinic, their arrest reports say.

They were charged with participation in a staged crash and taken to the Orient Road Jail. Bail was set at $7,500 each.

The arrests come amid news that the number of staged auto crashes appears to be increasing.

The people who stage such accidents probably think that they are only hurting the large insurance companies. However, the costs are simply passed along to those of us who buy auto insurance and don't engage in fraud.

A guy faked his own death complete with a body from a cemetery - crash and fire late night, remote area, etc. Cops didn't buy. The fire covered a lot of evidence but skid marks, car damage, and other things "just didn't look right". Hottest part of the fire was the driver seat. DNA didn't check out. Wife got a new boyfriend a little too soon - turned out to be the dead guy with insurance, of course. He was a felon wanting to clear his record with a new identity. Got one too - a six digit TDCJ number. So did she. I agree, not much to do with gasoline prices but might affect insurance rates.

There are a lot of people with either Hispanic names or names that sound Hispanic who are third, fourth, and even fifth or higher generations of Americans. Don't go around pasting labels on these people that probably don't belong to them. We have lots of Puerto Ricans who have Hispanic names as well and they are practically American citizens except for the fact that they don't want to join the U.S.A. because we have high taxes etc. Masso up there is an Italian surname despite the Lopez in the middle which might be Mama's maiden name. What they are is crooks by any other name. If we weren't in such bad shape jobwise people would not think up schemes like this to get money.

There's already some suspicions surrounding the San Diego highway incident that the driver claims was related to Toyota's acceleration problems. Now the state of California is getting into the act claiming that Toyota sold vehicles in the state that they new had problems. All kinds of scams are going to come out of the wood work in order to make an easy buck -- or should I say millions or even billions when all is said and done.
