leemun: you won't find fracking near large population centers. So what's your point about those ppl being ecofreaks? They are simply living there and not knowing better, allowed for drilling on their land.

It looks like this fracking process should be slowed down & perhaps not used at all

Fracking needs to be better researched as to its affects...the "proprietary" mix that is injected needs to be given the government for testing.

Sounds "fracking" bad. Why can't they do this with just sand and water?

The question is whether or not the methane get into the well because of the fracking or would the methane have gotten into the wells regardless?

Uh, pretty straightforward there, more and more oil and gas are being extracted with hydro-fracking - because the easy oil has already been extracted. Fracking gets more oil out of fields that had already petered out, or that with traditional drilling didn't produce enough to be worthwhile in the first place. But the environmental impacts are also being debated - which affect the possible future risks and costs and therefore oil and gas prices. Fracking adds production costs, but gets us oil and gas we wouldn't otherwise have - and without which, we'd see even higher prices.

Or, you could just skip articles that don't fit your narrow definition of appropriate topics, rather than waste time complaining about them.

If fracking pollutes, stop the fracking. Does anyone follow this logic? We are being led by some very dumb people.

As far as all the comments knocking "government scientists" - are you people seriously suggesting that scientists paid by the oil industry to produce clean bills of health on oil company activity are more trustworthy?!? At least the scientists commissioned by the government to conduct studies are a little less clearly self-interested in finding a particular result. Sort of like letting the oil industry (effectively) largely self-regulate itself in the Gulf didn't work out so well.

I've heard of similar complaints regarding well fracking in areas of Alberta here also - but then, there are parts of the province where the well water is naturally contaminated with hydrogen sulfide and hydrocarbons. I tend to suspect that people who live in areas where fracking is being used may be right that the practice is increasing contamination of drinking water. But fracking is widely used, yet the complaints aren't so much, so probably there is some factor that accounts for why it causes problems some but not all cases.

We have to have that Natural Gas. We cannot go to renewable energy as we do not want to spend that much money. Besides, it is only contaminated water. what is the big deal? If they do not want to get sick, then don't drink the water!!!! And if they do not like the smell, then move. Drilling for gas and oil are more important than people's health!!

Simple? So every vehicle will have an engine that instead of costing a few thousand dollars to make, costs $50,000+ (before putting a vehicle around it).
Simple? Hydrogen is MADE from hydrocarbons - so fracking and other extraction techniques would still be used to produce the source stocks to produce hydrogen. Which also means similar carbon footprint as well, just won't be at the tailpipe, it would be at refineries.

Simple? Hydrogen has low energy density, yet is highly explosive. It has to be stored under extremely high pressures, unlike petroleum or natural gas. Unlike petroleum and natural gas, it weakens metals. All of which means hydrogen transportation and storage in the sort of quantities to replace existing energy distribution infrastructure is orders of magnitude more expensive and difficult than petroleum or natural gas.
