Anti-Shale Gas Activists "Study It To Death" Strategy Threatens Natural Gas Development

Science 2.0 -- New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s rumored retreat on fracking shows just how powerful an anti-science, fear-based campaign can be. If reports are correct, Cuomo will restrict fracking to a few counties in which gas shale is far below the water table, and allow a veto to localities that are dominated by anti-fracking radicals. It's all in the name of ensuring the safety of drinking water, he purportedly believes--or protecting his political base.

Cuomo's decision validates the anti-frackers’ “study it to death” strategy. Their goal is to create the illusion that horizontal fracturing pollutes drinking water — even though the Environmental Protection Agency has publicly (if reluctantly) acknowledged that there is not one documented case of such pollution.

agree, sounds bites are not sufficient info but we rely way too much on them because the nets know they can only keep our attention that long.
by the way, I support fracking because it is safe and that is proven.

There is a huge amount of deceiving information spouted out to the public about hydraulic fracturing, a decades-old technology. Those who spread this misinformation are mostly preying on the public's fears, with an ultimate goal of forcing state governments to succumb to that fear and prevent or even ban hydraulic fracturing. We need to make sure that the discussion is productive, and that any rules are legitimately conceived. Fact must be separated from fiction.

The most common claim talking point is that hydraulic fracturing contaminates ground water. This is baseless. Have you ever noticed that the critics who make that claim never provide concrete evidence? The reason for their omission? It is obvious why. After being used more than 1.2 million times there have been no confirmed cases of hydraulic fracturing contaminating water. None. Never. Ever.

As EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson said in April of 2012, "In no case have we made a definitive determination that the fracking process has caused chemicals to enter groundwater."

The three "smoking gun" cases that the anti-shale zealots were sinking their teeth into have proven false or based on very poor science. See Pavillion WY, Dimoch, PA, and Parker County, TX.

Oh and the "evil Halliburton Loophole" talking point! LOL, what a joke. This is the errant claim born out of the yellow journalism of "gasland", a proven fraudulent film by Josh Fox, that hydraulic fracturing is "exempt" from the Safe Drinking Water Act, thanks to an energy bill passed by Congress in 2005. The truth??? SDWA has been the law of the land for nearly 40 years, and at no point has it ever covered hydraulic fracturing. Why??? States already tightly and effectively regulate the process.

How can an industry be exempt from something that never covered you in the first place? But you hear this falsehood talking point most every time the subject comes up.

It is important to rely on facts and science, not fear-mongering talking points.

WOW! Science2.0 is so mainstream it has scintillating articles such as: "That Squid On Your Plate Could Inseminate Your Mouth"....PLEEZ! Just what I need is a pregnant mouth!

Lets back up and realize that Big Oil/Gas has their opinions (tentacles) in this article. Sorry, squid...tentacles no pun intended.

"How much money will be wasted studying shale-gas extraction, which has been evaluated for years and shown to be safe?

The fracking revolution has fueled an energy boom, saving billions of dollars and boosting the fragile economy. New York, in particular, is just plain lucky that we have all these energy reserves.

But that innovation and economic advantage can be frittered away if ideologues’ scare campaigns prevail.

------------------------------------

Pretty well sums up the Eco-Imperialist agenda.

Pay no attention to the facts and the science folks! Just hear us cuz we are telling you to be skeered!

Never mind about the sticky little fact that there has never been any proven case of their wild claims.

Oh yeah, I'd trust the EPA. Reality: neither side is 100% sure what damage is being caused, or to what extent- but common sense tells you some is being done.

this is a nightmare topic...it's like the transformers in your front yard that they say don't hurt you, but then studies that show that it does somehow disappear.

I have yet to read a study whose conclusion was, in part, that more studies were needed. It's also called job security for researchers.

What are you talking about, clermont40miles? Are we burning baby seals now?

The way I see it, the fracking debate is very similar to the nuclear debate. Both promise cheap, clean energy but, boy do they ignore the GIANT downside if a mishap occurs!

Everyone needs to ask themselves this question. Would you risk your life and the lives of your children just for cheaper energy? And if you would do that, then how much cheaper? Would you do it to save $100 per year? $500 per year? $1,000 per year? In the end, how much is your life worth?

cut back on natural gas drilling, shut down the coal plants, no off shore drilling. yup, i'm sure that will work.

Can you prove that we have the technology to drill without ill effects, Goody2317? An even better question is "If the technology exists, will the oil and gas industry actually use it or just go the cheap way and roll the dice that nothing bad will happen?"

Which choice makes more economic sense to them?

You're right about that, Focus2. They don't have to drill on your land in order to get the oil and gas underneath it. It's just like in the movie, "There Will Be Blood". It's all about the "DRAINAGE!!!" As Daniel Day Lewis said, "I drink your milkshake. I drink it up!"

Also remember that just because they don't drill directly on your land doesn't mean that your well water won't be affected.

These eco-nuts have kept this country from being what it once was. We have the technology to do this without hurting anything, but they still would rather us go back to the stone ages since they will constantly harp over and over how bad something will be.

More people live in the city than live in the country, kusanagisama. If you want to stay in the country, that's fine but don't expect the majority of Americans to accommodate your rural lifestyle.

I have gotten letters from a Colorado based energy group that wants to lease my farm acres for oil and gas fracking. I didn't answer them, and don't know what to make of it all yet. They aren't just going after mine but everyone else farm in Southern Illinois! Just because they lease doesn't mean they will drill or drill on your land. They could drill on another property and still get to your oil and gas.

Why don't we just shut down every single bit of energy production in this country and then let the green wackos see what happens then. Most of these green idiots are city folk who know nothing about how to grow and produce food, so when we can't get any food in from the countryside, they'll starve.
