Andreoli on Oil & Fuel: There’s a danger to ditching diesel

Logistics Management -- The average truck consumes roughly 11,000 gallons of diesel per year. Consequently, even minor shifts in fuel prices have a significant impact on operating costs. For instance, when applied to a fleet of 100 trucks, a price drop of 25 cents per gallon generates annual savings exceeding a quarter of a million dollars.

Of course, in a competitive environment, some, if not all of these savings, are passed on to shippers, but the opposite is also true. When prices increase, shippers, carriers, and consumers all take a hit.

We could make it much better by going B-50 or B-75 using homegrown oils which can come from plants that would actually improve the soils upon which they are grown, rather than depleting them.

If diesel is the best choice and price, so be it. If natural gas is your best choice, then use it. In town use, an EV or an Inbred might be a good choice. Use the vehicle and fuel that suits your application with the cheapest vehicle and fuel cost possible. Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, has a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. Consider using other forms of less expensive transportation to lower your cost. The price of fuel at the pump is too high! 12/22/2012!

Diesel is a good and effective combustion fuel for motive transport, especially long-haul. Natural Gas and CNG can be effective in short-haul and local delivery situations but has not been economical in long-haul. Engines as developed will have a major impact on the economies of diesel vs. CNG or other fuel sources. No matter what, we the consumer pay the transport cost.

NG is not capable of being the fuel that diesel is. Natural gas is NOT new and has been tested for years and does not standout as a vehicle fuel but is great for heating homes and factories.

Sorry but I have no love for diesels after being stuck behind one once too often on the way to work. Nothing like arriving with a headache for work even before the headache of work begins in the city.
