Swedish researcher investigates beeps and bleeps to improve driver safety

Johann Fagerlonn's research in Sweden may one day improve traffic safety in Houston, Chicago or Baltimore. During his four years as a PhD student at Scania he studied how the arbitrary beeps and bleeps, that we usually experience, compare with meaningful auditory warning signals that have a clear correlation with the traffic situation. In December 2011 he presented his dissertation at the Luleå University of Technology.

“Through sound, we can relieve pressure on sight and thereby help the driver to focus on looking ahead,” he says. “Sounds tend to attract our attention, whether we like it or not. Just think of how we react when a mobile phone starts ringing in the middle of a meeting.”
