EIA: Gasoline and distillate stocks remain much lower than year ago

GasBuddy Blog -- The Energy Information Administration released its weekly report on the condition of petroleum inventories in the United States today.

Here are some highlights:

CRUDE INVENTORIES:
Crude oil inventories decreased by 0.5 million barrels to a total of 364.7 million barrels. At 364.7 million barrels, inventories are 28.4 million barrels above last year (8.4%) and are above the upper limit of the average range.

GASOLINE INVENTORIES:
Gasoline inventories increased by 0.1 million barrels to 195.9 million barrels. At 195.9 million barrels, inventories are down 17.8 million barrels, or 8.3% lower than last year. Here's how individual regions and their gasoline inventory fared last week: East Coast (-0.7mb);...

When you think of this if inventories rise to far you need more storage and that costs money too. If they limit imports of crude oil to the amount of storage capacity and balance refinery production to demand then gas prices should decline. But gas prices at the pump dont seem to follow the supply and demand theory and that part still has me puzzled.
