NYC aiming to help motorists find available on-street parking- and fast

GasBuddy Blog -- The New York City Department of Transportation recently announced that it wants to help motorists find on-street parking- without even having to drive around.

It seems a bit ironic- the pilot to help motorists find parking without having to drive around, but that's exactly what the city is aiming to do. NYC DOT installed nearly 200 "high-tech" parking sensors along a busy parking corridor a few months ago to see how the devices planted in the road would handle NYC conditions- that is constantly being driven over, stepped on, and beaten up. The sensors, made in Holland by Nedap AVI, cost about $250US each, and two are needed for each parking spot. One of the advantages of living in a small rural town is not having to worry about a parking spot. I feel for those that have this problem however.

Better to just avoid New York entirely. You'll save huge amounts of money and headaches.

ampinoy13, I always thought that most people in NY took cabs or the subway.

I drove through NY once. Upped my life insurance after that experience. Talk about getting in touch with your mortality!!!!

If your app tells you there's no parking on a certain street, you're still going to drive around.

Interesting technology, though.

This stuff has become the standard for parking lots here. Seems like it's about time it hit the streets.

How about people in NYC not driving. I lived in Manhattan many years ago and, even then, finding a parking space was often not an option. Plus the subway is a GREAT way to get from point "A" to point "B".

I did not have a car when I lived there. I had no problem in getting anywhere in the four main boroughs. If I needed to go to the fifth borough, Staten Island, I simply took the subway to the south end of Manhattan and got on the ferry.
