FP -- Diesel engines on average offer about 25% greater fuel efficiency than a traditional combustion engine, or roughly the same amount of a hybrid, says George Magliano, IHS Global Insight analyst. But the extra value comes in the selling price. The average diesel-powered vehicle will cost about $2,000 more than a traditional internal combustion engine, while a hybrid variation might cost upwards of $7,000, depending on the make and model, he says.

The diesel option on the Grand Cherokee in 2008 cost $6,000 extra, but the resale value of the diesel Grand Cherokee commands up to a $10,000 premium to the gas model today.

Mercedes-Benz, for example, estimates that between 75% and 85% of its customers will choose diesel when given both options.

Most new customers are shocked the first time they even price around for an oil change let along a major service repair. Look at all aspects before you purchase anything. It is a better risk purchasing a used gas vehicle than a used diesel vehicle if yoiu don't know the true history and how the previous owner drove and maintained it. I have many customer who wished they never heard the word diesel. They are the best for what they are intended to do, work and pull but don't make a good street racer. Have one for for heavy work at the shop but more fun driving the gas job for fun and pleasure.

I’ve never owned a Chevy before and I hope that I will not be disappointed, but so far I’m happy. The car now has 401 miles on it (not close to being broke in) but during the last 175 miles of combined driving I averaged 34.62 MPG from a relatively inexpensive vehicle that can run on regular. Gasoline can save money too if you drive the right vehicle.

But with about 30% better fuel economy, they will pay for themselves (not including higher resale value). Currently, diesels don't enjoy the mass market share of regular gasoline engines. If they did, prices would certainly be lower (economy of scale).

There are more diesel cars in Europe than gas, and in Japan almost every gas vehicle on the market has a hybrid and diesel version. In other words, America is decades late to the diesel party.

That skews the actual costs. If they were made available without those premium upgrades (available as options) then the prices of hybrids would be MUCH lower and comparable to the other vehicles in their offerings. That's where the manufacturers show their true colours: they want to sell fuel-saving vehicles only to customers with more money... as a status symbol, rather than a meaningful way to reduce the company's carbon footprint — they simply make more profit on the polluting junk that comprises their regular lineup. They've also been avoiding the clean-diesel technology, mostly because they don't own the rights to it and would have to license it.

On the highway, I have got 20 MPG and this is in a Chevy Silverado 3500, 1 ton rating. It gets it job done, I do pull a fifth wheel with it at times. Deisels have been used in Europe for some time now in its vehicles.

It seemed to me that a Diesel electric Hybrid would be ideal. And in terms of Average mpg they could be quite nice. But it seems that one of the main reasons that Diesel Electrics haven't been brought to the market is cost. Diesel engines cost more than regular gas cars and hybrids also cost more so combining the two makes for an even more expensive car. Auto makers seem to think the two together would be prohibitively expensive. According to an article in [L=http://www.autoevolution.com/news/text deleted/L] - "'Hybrid technology can be applied to any sort of powertrain. From the perspective of a hybrid, it makes no difference,' said Dave Buchko, a BMW spokesman, in 2008." In 2008, Volkswagen developed a Golf TDI Hybrid concept, which used a 1.2-liter three cylinder common rail diesel engine and an electric motor. The car’s average mpg was 69 mpg which was better than Toyota Prius' 54 mpg. But the Diesel/Hybrid Golf (known as the Rabbit in North-America) would have been expensive to produce. As they put it: " Petrol-electric hybrids are more expensive than conventional petrol cars, and diesels are also more expensive than their petrol counterparts. Combining the two would create a very expensive vehicle. A buyer would have to use it for a very long period of time in order to compensate for the high purchase price" I suppose they might have been right that some folks wouldn't want to pay top dollar for a Volkswagen Rabit. Or are there no small diesels? If diesel's are 'just as good' as hybrids, why not blend both technologies? Are diesel's harder to start, so the autostart feature in some hybrids will not work? Is this why large diesel trucks let their engines idle instead of stopping them while at truck stops?
