Wind turbines stir up bad feelings, health concerns in DeKal

Chicago Tribune -- Months have passed since anyone has waved hello to one another in Waterman or Shabbona in rural DeKalb County. Some people claim they've even stopped going to church to avoid having to talk to former friends.
"It's gone. The country way of living is gone," declares Susan Flex, who lives in Waterman with her husband and their nine children.
The animosity stems from the greenest of energy sources: a wind farm.

The turbines started arriving last summer, at a rate of two a day, their parts trucked in on flatbeds. Today 126 turbines dot the county, with another 19 just over the border in Lee County. They have been making enough electricity since December to power 55,000 homes, roughly twice the needs of Oak Park.

There would always be some cons for each alternatives but looking at the benefits of wind turbines we need atleast to take up the initiatives

I'm all for wind turbines as an alternative form of energy, however, this news item has nothing to do with gas/oil/energy pricing.

Wind turbines are not all there promoted to be. Like anything else they solve one problem and create another.

Clean, efficient power. But no one wants it in their area.

These are the stupidest things the greenie weenies have come up with yet. What a horrible thing to have anywhere near anyone. Not to mention the heanaches being associated with them. They cause an inaudible sound wave from the ground that has been causing headache and migraine breakouts in Michigan near one of the sites. Very sad that these people have to contend with them.

It's such a stupid argument; why fight over something that is so good for all of us?

Why are we so argumentative here in the US? It seems like, now-a-days, we DON'T want to try to get along with out neighbors. What's up with that?

Personally, I don't like to see them during the day when I drive by them (usually half of them aren't turning) and at night the in sync flashing of the tower lights are very distracting to me.

DeKalb County does not allow the turbines closer than 1400 feet from a home, according to the story. That is WAY too close to preserve the health and sanity of the residents. Note that the two doctors who said there are no health problems were hired by American Wind Energy Association. What do you expect them to say? Placing these huge industrial machines within a mile of a residence should be prohibited.

Wind turbines are not what they are made out to be. I cannot speak to Illinois but wind power in the eastern mountains is a snare and delusion. The wind is too erratic to provide reliable power. It blows the strongest when needed least and is typically calm during maximum power demand on hot summer days. Conventional generators must be up and running, ready to back up the wind turbines when the wind velocity diminishes, so we still need all the nukes and coal plants. It is an inconvenient truth that there would be no wind turbines in the east if there were no taxpayer subsidies to support it.

Just more NIMBY. They want more alternative energy, just not near where they live.

I wonder back in the day when water towers were being built all over if people worried about them as much?

And what of the people who live under airport flight paths, near railroad right-of-ways; mills and factories of all kinds; chicken ranches and pig farms; distillers, refineries, paper processors; crematoriums; high volume highways;emergency rooms; firehouses... I guess I should stop here because I don't see an end of unpleasant places to live that come to mind but where people still do.

Farms, orchards, ranches, fields, etc. keep getting pushed further from our urban sprawl. A growing population needs to have homes somewhere, but are we managing it well?

Like everything new, it takes time to adjust to it. Give it a few more years and people will start to open up to it more.

So, the gal WITH NINE CHILDREN and her other backwoods neighbors decry the wind turbines? Pardon me for laughing so hard I fell out of my chair.

Buddy, you said a mouthful. We have had wind turbines for years around. There are a whole raft of them in the Tehachapis just over the California border from us. I saw tons of them in Europe and they were not hurting anyone just doing their thing. Don't you suppose some of us think of barbed wire the same way those complainers in DeKalb think of the turbines??? We get along with it and it doesn't take away from the country at all. It is all in their heads. Maybe they were just looking for an excuse to be rude. Some people seem to think that way.

I have been in my RV where there were wind turbines and saw no problems. I got as close to one as I could. They may not be the best but neither is smog and smoke from coal. I saw give it a little time and it will catch on. Conservation keeps your money in your pocket.
