California needs money and this is their new tobacco bank haul... Why didn't they go after Ford for all their fire recalls... Ford did the same thing... is it because Californian's prefer Toyota over 'domestic' brands... the prosecutor is looking to forward their political career... it's what all lawyers do, go after the person with the biggest pockets and media attention...

Toyota turned stupid. Actually, in a worse way than GM, Chrysler, and Ford.

i'm not saying what toyota did, or didn't do, was right, but look back over the years at the exploding pinto, the explorers that blew off the road with a 20mph crosswind, and firestone with their shredding tires-did congress give them "what for" in an effort to score election day browny points ??..
that's all this is folks-election day brownie points..

TOYOTA - once you drive one you'll never stop.
Sounds better than fix or repair daily, found on the road dead, ford has a better idea, king of the sixes, ask the man who owns one, etc.

Come on Benjy, let's not blame all of the Japanese people for possible errors (I didn't really look into the issue. I suspect American politics is involved; like what the Dem leadership in Congress is trying to do to it's fiscally more responsible co-party members there ... appalling.

"Certainly they ignored the defects, or at least they hid them from public knowledge."
In this day and age, it is very difficult to hide much from public knowledge.

If a manufacturer make a product that has a known defect, they should go about fixing the defect rather than hiding in the sand or trying to deflect via lawyers defense.

Toyota is only interested in making money as is the case of most large industries. Worse than this is the fact that Congress is only interested in getting re-elected and majing a lot of money under the table. I'll take industries any time.

In large companies the reality is things do get ignored. For Example look at some of the issues with computer software makers.

Go California, I was almost hit by one of these out of control pieces of $hit yesterday. When you consider Toyota consists of maybe 5% of the vehicles around here thats big. I thought it was my lucky day so I bought a lottery ticket. Missing getting hit used all my luck up. I should have stayed in front of him and let him hit me as to slow him down.

Lawsuite was evident to happen to Toyota.
It is not s surprice that it too so long to happen since there are a lot less people who got the money to sue others today.
It is for sure that the US, South Korean, German, Swedish, and the other Japanese automakers are going to like this stuff Toyota is going through.

Jeanmarie: Toyota has known about sudden acceleration complaints for close to a decade and the problems still aren't resolved. It was only about 6 months ago that they were blaming the consumer for stepping on the wrong pedal, then blaming the isue on improperly installed floor mats, then the vendor that made the pedals, and now are trying to blame the issue on mechanical failures of the pedal design rather than admit to the obvious software flaw. But you claim they have not covered anything up? Really?

Toyota will have to answer the claims some have made that they hid defects from the government. If it is true, Toyota will pay billions.

they have not been covering up anything at Toyota. They have been quite open about some possible problems with their customers sending notifications and taking the time to do what needs to be done and providing a place and time as well. We have a motor home on a Ford Chassis - one ton and it has a recall but try to get it in to get it fixed. Ain't happening! We have called and called all the numbers they gave us and none seem to know what to do. I would rather deal with Toyota than Chrysler, GM, or Ford and of those three Ford is my favorite. The others are almost over the river and through the woods to the crazy place.

Toyota has done this to themselves, they could have made things go a lot differently. I believe that they will come back from all of these problems, but this will cost the company for a lot of years to come.

I would imagine if we check all vehicles manufactured have some problem. The will find it is electrical and correct it, I am sure. Conservation keeps your money in your pocket.
