I have an old Dell Inspiron laptop - circa 2004 - that I use as a backup and to check email when all our other computers are in use - it has recently started having a weird video problem - basically after it boots and is loading up, the screen goes dark. I took it to the office and plugged it in to an extra monitor and it worked fine - brought it home and had the same problem. Any ideas? I'd hate to just dump it because I have some databases I built using Filemaker. But it is too old to spend a lot getting it fixed.

So you are getting the BIOS screen and you see the 'Loading Windows' then it goes away?
Other wise it works fine when plugged into an external monitor.
Could be a couple things;
1) Screen resolution is out of whack(safe mode or external monitor and reset to 800x600 and work from there)
2) LCD is dying (Could be a CCL)

Unless you can eBay a replacement LCD for under $100 it is hard to justify spending more then $200 on fixing it when new laptops are $300-$500

Sounds like the display is shot! Time to buy a new one since replacing the display is costly!
