I've got tip 5 down pat - I bike to work. Granted it's only 10 miles round trip, but its $1.33 I don't spend each day. When I do drive I hypermile if the situation allows, and if it doesn't I maximize my coasting time and engine braking time between the lights. The gas I don't burn is the gas I don't need to buy.

Our golden child president already told us how to save on gas. You have regularly scheduled tune-ups and make sure your tires are properly inflated (while paying out of your @ss for each gallon of gas).
There you have it. If you need this kind of advice, just ask NOBAMA.
I would like to add a third step. Vote NOBAMA OUT of office in November. He wants gas prices high so you will buy those expensive Leafs, Volts, and Hybrids. And he won't tell you how expensive Obamacare REALLY is. ACCESS is not AFFORDABLE HEALTHCARE, folks. Do you want him to raise our deficit by another 5 to 6 TRILLION DOLLARS????

"Summer always brings higher gas prices, especially as refiners switch to summer formulations. But just as warm weather is hitting the Snow Belt early in 2012" What??
Is this article from early April?

The best choice would be to have a high mpg vehicle that's paid off, and good for another 10 years at least. Like my car, a 10 year old turbodiesel VW wagon, 55 US mpg average last 4 complete tanks ie about 60 US gallons of diesel in the last 3300/5300 km miles. By now, all the stuff that's going to go wrong has gone wrong, and I don't care what it looks like anymore.
Electric is the way to go in the future. People who laugh at electrics just aren't reading the fine print about the cost of running one. ie, almost nil. No oil or filter changes, no emissions, mufflers, radiators, engine cooling systems, water pumps, transmissions, and so forth. With regenerative braking, even the brakes, as in hybrids too, last 5 or 6 times longer. And the cost for 'fuel'? About 1/5 that of a gasoline car.
Rule of thumb: the distance you go in a car is about $5.00 for gasoline = $3.50 for diesel = $0.90 for an electric. Yeah, big upfront cost but no maintenance costs or fuel costs...and your insurance will be about 50% of what you are paying in some markets.
