Many #'s of reasons: We need to be much more involved in our own drilling; as stated before, refineries shutting down for maintenance AND to change to the boutique blends: the permit process used to take 3 months and now with the "new, improved epa" the process can drag out to 18 months with much more regulation, red tape, FEES; the fed printing WAY TOO MUCH money which in turn make the dollar worthless. Just a few.......The government makes more from one gallon of gas than do the oil companies.....

Interantional supply and demand, refineries shut down on the West Coast and the (NE) East Coast, and throw in a little fear of what those nut-bags in Syria and Iran are up to. Just because we are using less oil and gas doesn't mean other countries are using less. India and China are catching up and using much more each year.

Your idea is silly. Cars have nothing to do with gas prices. If you mean updating to get better gas mileage, the cost of a new vehicle will offset any savings for years. Not to mention so many people can't afford a new or newer car.

Oil companies and refineries are profit oriented corporations. Pricing is all about profitably! The goal of any, for profit corproation is get more $$'s from you and into their profit picture. How sucessful they are, depends on what they have to sell. In this case, its something consumers must have, so it works well for them, but not so well for consumers. Then to muddy the picture, we have the speculators involved, since it is a commodity. I think we all know what effect speculators have on energy costs to the consumer. It really matters little how much we cut our usage, the less we use, the higher the cost will become, again, to protect that profitability.

In California because of taxes, greed. In the U.S. in general because the goverment sold us out to big oil which gets tax breaks and sells our excess supply to India, China, Brazil. We should be paying lower prices here because we have been using less as a result of the economic downturn.

I may be naive but you're saying that gas is getting higher in price because of the amount of people not buying newer cards?
Can you, because I don't quite understand the logic, explain why their not upgrading their cards is causing fuel gas prices to go up?

Hey Badger,
Actually the Volt seems to work pretty well. Do I have one? No but I would if I had cash to buy one. Most of the articles that I have read in auto magazines that have tested say it is pretty good. Just too expensive.
